Article 7 - Woolworths
Woolworths was one of the longest established shops in Orpington.
Orpington,   Store   No   0532,   opened   on   the   6.01.34   and   extended   on   03.03.39.   Extended,   modernised   and   converted   to   self-service   on 24.04.64   (pictured   below)   in   the   building   it   would   remain   in   for   next   44   years.   Refurbished   under   the   cornerstone   strategy   to   include   a new   delicatessen   counter   and   an   extended   range   of   foods,   soap   powders   and   pet   foods   as   well   as   a   new   look   Entertainment department,   reopened   by   Managing   Director   Richard   Harker   and   Regional   Manager   Mike   Morris   on   17.08.84.   Two   years   later   food was   abandoned   and   much   of   the   work   had   to   be   undone.   The   store   was   relayed   to   the   comparison   concept.   It   was   refurbished   to   the latest 10/10 specification in 2005. The   Orpington   Store   closed   on   the   27th   December   2008.   The   building   it   occupied   was   vacant   for   a   time   becoming   Ethel   Austin   for   a short while and is now a low cost general store again... Funny how things that go around come around...
